A Yellow Man_ 3000 Miles of Youth

I’m not a Christian, nor do I hold any other title of that nature, I do however appreciate people that believe in something and put their positive belief into what they are doing. While scrolling through my facebook I came across this video on the timeline of Amanda NK watched and appreciated the creativity of these young artists. Always appreciate music with no false pretence, just reflections of people that seem just like some good people. A Yellow Man seems like such a group of people, stay grounded. Read More »

Maurice Sendak_ Rest In Peace

When I was employed, every few weeks I would take a trip to HMV on Yonge St. to look through the documentary aisle in the DVD section. One day I came across this Film by Spike Jonze (the director of the Where the Wild Things Are movie) called Tell Them Anything you Want a doc on artist, illustrator, writer Maurice Sendak. I didn’t know anything about him at the time other than he was responsible for one of my favourite books as a child, Where the Wild Things Are. Together with Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein and The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak made a huge impact on my life and I didn’t know who he was until my 30′s. A Lovers Call_ Najma Nuriddin

Last summer a friend of mine called me up and asked if a filmmaker friend of his from could crash at my place while they visited Toronto (if you watch the Cocoons video you will see her and I strolling into Afrofest 2011). I met Najma Nuriddin that weekend and had the opportunity to hear about the films she was working on. I visited DC in the fall and crashed on her couch. Najma studied at Howard University under Haile Gerima (who I also had the opportunity to meet while in DC). Glad to see that Najma has finished one of her film projects and is screening it in DC (May 18), this is the trailer for her film A Lovers Call.

John Forte_ The Russian Winter

John Forte spent seven years in prison after being closely associated with Lauryn Hill and the Fugees and their enormous record The Score. Since then he’s been pushing at his own music and struggling to break through. This is a trailer for a documentary that documents a Russian tour he recently did and his fight to find his space again.

Ozwald Boateng_ A Man’s Story

Another one from the blog of Tigist Selam. I don’t know how she finds this shit. Anyway, this is a trailer for a documentary about Ozwald Boateng a British fashion designer of Ghanaian descent who I didn’t know about pre-Tigist. I don’t know if I agree with his evaluation of style vs. substance but I’m not mad at the brother. Below is part one of an older documentary on him called ‘Why Style Matters,’ click ‘part two’ for part two.

PART TWO you can find the other parts on your own :)

J. Cole_ Sideline Story

I appreciate J. Cole, I can’t say I’m a fan, but I appreciate the guy. There is something that seems to be holding him back from where he was being set up to go, obviously he knows that because this whole song is about that. I’m glad he changed the beat, this one is more soulful than the original, nice and laid back. “we all got angels, we all got demons”
